No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
