A recent study reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
